Why Does Moissanite Pass the Diamond Tester? The Science You Need to Know

Place some traditional diamond testers against a moissanite stone and you may get a surprising result: the device can indicate “diamond.”

That does not mean moissanite is a diamond, nor does it mean the tester is necessarily broken. The reason comes down to the physical properties these devices are designed to measure.

So why does moissanite sometimes pass a diamond tester? Here is the science behind it.

1. How Does a Diamond Tester Work?

Many traditional handheld diamond testers identify stones primarily by measuring thermal conductivity — how quickly heat moves through a material.

Diamond conducts heat extremely efficiently. When the tester's probe touches the stone, the device measures the rate at which heat is transferred away from the tip.

If that thermal response falls within the range the tester associates with diamond, the device may produce a diamond reading.

Importantly, not every diamond tester works in exactly the same way. Newer and combination testers may use additional measurements to help distinguish between different gemstones.

2. Why Can Moissanite Trigger a Diamond Reading?

Moissanite is made from silicon carbide (SiC), while diamond is made from carbon. They are therefore completely different gemstones.

However, moissanite also conducts heat efficiently. On some older or basic thermal testers, its thermal response can be similar enough to diamond to trigger a positive reading.

This is why a basic diamond tester alone may not always be sufficient to distinguish the two materials.

A positive reading does not mean that moissanite has somehow become diamond. It simply means the tester is detecting a physical property that both materials can exhibit strongly.

3. Does Passing a Diamond Tester Mean Moissanite Is Fake Diamond?

No. Moissanite is a distinct gemstone with its own chemical composition, crystal structure, optical properties, and durability.

It is not cubic zirconia and it is not a synthetic form of diamond.

Moissanite has a refractive index of approximately 2.65–2.69, compared with approximately 2.42 for diamond. It also has stronger dispersion, which is why moissanite can display more noticeable rainbow-colored flashes of light, often referred to as fire.

It also measures approximately 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it highly resistant to everyday scratching and suitable for frequently worn jewelry.

4. Can Modern Testers Tell Moissanite and Diamond Apart?

Many modern testing devices are designed specifically to reduce confusion between moissanite and diamond.

Some combination testers assess both thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity. Moissanite and diamond behave differently under these measurements, which can help the instrument distinguish between them.

Professional gemologists may also combine electronic testing with magnification and other observations rather than relying on a single handheld device.

The key point is simple: a basic thermal diamond tester is a screening tool, not a complete gemstone identification system.

5. Can You Tell Moissanite from Diamond by Looking at It?

Sometimes, but not always easily.

One visual difference is moissanite's stronger dispersion, which can create more colorful flashes under bright or direct lighting.

Moissanite is also a doubly refractive material. Under magnification and from certain viewing angles, trained professionals may observe doubling of facet junctions inside the stone.

That observation can help with identification, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed test on its own. Stone orientation, cut, size, and viewing conditions can all affect what is visible.

For confident identification, professional testing is preferable to judging a stone only by appearance.

6. Does a Diamond Tester Measure Gemstone Quality?

No. This is an important distinction.

A diamond tester measures particular physical properties. It does not determine whether a moissanite stone has excellent cut, good proportions, high clarity, or attractive light performance.

Two moissanite stones may produce similar readings on a tester while looking very different because of differences in cut, symmetry, color, clarity, or proportion.

At STDIAM, those visual characteristics matter more to us than whether a gemstone happens to trigger a handheld tester.

You can learn more about the details we consider in our Moissanite 4Cs Guide.

7. Why This Confusion Happens So Often

Diamond testers became popular because they offered a quick and convenient way to separate diamond from many common simulants.

Moissanite complicated that process because its thermal behavior can overlap with the range detected by some traditional devices.

That is why videos showing moissanite “passing” a diamond tester can be misleading if they imply that the stone is secretly a diamond or that the test proves exceptional gemstone quality.

In reality, the result simply reflects how the instrument works.

Final Thoughts

Moissanite can pass some traditional diamond testers because it conducts heat efficiently enough to trigger the device's diamond response.

That does not make moissanite a diamond, and it does not determine the quality of the stone.

Moissanite remains a distinct gemstone with its own brilliance, fire, durability, and optical character. Modern combination testers and professional gemological methods can distinguish it from diamond far more reliably than a basic thermal tester alone.
